HOW TO GET A JOB IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY

Welcome! Many aspiring talent have the same standard question.. “How do I get a job in entertainment?” Here are some helpful hints to help YOU get started in this fun industry!

1. GET TRAINED

Yes, Training is key to your success as an actor or model. For instance, consider you are applying for a job as a violinist at a major event that will be seen by millions of people. Would the hiring manager be more likely to consider your application by someone who hasn’t taken a lesson, doesn’t have anything to hear or look at, but is confident they can do the job? OR… Would they look closer at the applicant that has had years of experience and can demonstrate their abilities through an audio reel and a resume illustrating their background and experience? Consider the phrase “You get what you put into it” as a rule of thumb. Training as an actor will be apart of you as long as your career lasts. Even legendary actors today, still train and have a coach. TRAININGS EQUAL BOOKINGS. Remember this. The more you train, the better you become.. with anything in life.

2. WORK AS AN EXTRA OR SOMETHING ENTRY LEVEL

Working as an extra will allow for you to be on set and experience film etiquette as well as day to day duties as an actor. Prepare yourself for long hours as an extra to see if acting is the right fit for you. You will be amazed at how much can be learned by just observing as a background actor.

3. NETWORKING

Once in the industry, you will find many opportunities to connect with other fellow actors or models. Relationships in this field remain strong and can potentially carry you into some major opportunities. Be involved in short films, fashion shows, community theater groups, etc.. Many social media groups post for opportunities “paid and unpaid”. Use your connections to gain representation with legitimate agencies and register for casting websites. Casting platforms are key to opportunity and can also assist in  seeing what is available in your area.

4. SOLID HEADSHOTS

An industry standard headshot is a professional headshot used for film and commercial. They are definitely 2 different looks and will be captured as such. Your headshot is the very first thing the casting director will see. Ensure that the lighting, colors, clothing, etc.. are all in sync with what you are trying to showcase. Yes, you can use photoshop to hide imperfections. No, you can’t use photoshop to give yourself a nose job. Photos that are used are to be the most up to date look that you have. Cut your hair? Get a new headshot. Lost some weight? Get a new headshot. Remember that you are being looked at RIGHT NOW. Don’t burn your bridges by showing up looking completely different. You were chosen based upon your photo too!
